In conjunction with Mardi Gras this week and marriage equality, let’s celebrate love because love is love. 

The fun-loving duo Tres and JJ, these individuals share something so precious and unique that you feel love when you are around them! This wedding meant so much more to them than just the outward symbol of being taken. Being together for 17 years has meant that these two shared a suitcase full of amazing adventures. From bridge walks to adventures across Europe and Asia and running a cafe business, these two made the most out of their relationship. 

Their Love Story…

Back in 2003, Tres had been appointed as the manager and assisted with the opening of the Odyssey Lounge Bar and Grill in Darlinghurst, Sydney, when he was pleasantly surprised on being introduced to the barrister: a tall, good-looking, slightly nerdy but high skilled with the coffee-machine, JJ. Tres instantly felt a connection and decided to play the matchmaker by ensuring JJ got rosters on all his shifts.

At the same time, JJ’s first impression of Tres was that he was very loud, amusing and looked terrific in shorts. It did not take long for JJ to understand the behind Tres’s flamboyant persona, lay one of the most caring and thoughtful soul one could ever know. The initial phase was a friendship that comprised more of meeting post-work and chatting while having a beer. Both of them had no idea when their friendship turned into love. All Tres could recall is JJ turned up at his place with his parents, bags packed, ready to move in! They have been inseparable ever since. December 2017, Australia legalised same-sex marriage, and the following year Tres asked JJ to marry him. 

The Wedding Venue

The fabulous wedding happened on 3rd October 2020 at Miramare Gardens in Sydney, traditionally owned by Guringai people. The venue offers one of the most picturesque wedding venues in Sydney, with all the right ingredients for making that idyllic wedding vision come to life, from unique architectural features to stunning gardens. It also has a grand ballroom featuring large windows that back onto immaculate gardens, creating a feeling of grandeur. These function venues on the Northern Beaches offer indoor and outdoor settings surrounded by pristine gardens, a photographer’s delight in capturing the day’s events.

Miramare Gardens also have a great team of professional caterers that take care of food requirements. The chefs pay close attention to all kinds of details. The presentation techniques that make each dish look tantalising and fresh source ingredients ensure every element of their work is relishing and impressive.

The Bridal Party, The Guests and The Celebrant

The best-looking assortment of guests and several showed their love from the LGBTQI community. There was the dashing page boy Sebastion, the angel-like flower girls Lucinda, Katie Jean, Annie and Frankie, the ultra-handsome groomsmen Dan, Will and Zack, and of course, the three hot maids Tina, Jess and Clara, along with the happy and proud parents of both the grooms.

Briahna Rae Tatham, from Ceremonies by Bri (find her on instagram-@ceremoniesbybri), was the celebrant whose script helped us write this blog. She is someone with a great sense of humour and brought life into the ceremony.

After the grooms exchanged the rings, they proceeded with their vows. 

JJ’s Vows

“I will say this: I am today a better person, with a fuller life, because I have a mate: a friend, an ally, a confidante. Tres often remarks that he thinks we are twins, but clearly, we are not.

But what we are is, as thick as thieves, and very close, and we will always be. We have so many good and a few not so, times together.

That is a relationship, right? Talk about “try before you buy”, 17 years. It was time. This is the time; this is the place to say, “Ok, let us do it. I could not imagine my life without you. I look forward to many more laughs, sometimes tears.”

Tres and I have an enduring friendship. I love his laugh, love his spirit, love our time together. I look forward to continuing to sleepover in the best restaurant I ever sleep in!

Whilst I can only make jokes to describe what is a meaningful, genuine partnership. I want to thank you, Tres, for saying yes. I love you…”

Tres’s Vows

“I am standing here today, as one of my childhood dreams is coming true.

The main reason I fell in love with you, apart from being tall, intelligent and drop-dead gorgeous, is that you complete me. I love our time spent just chilling out and doing nothing at all, no expectations, no schedules, just you and me.

You have taught me to be patient and understanding, and I am looking forward to new adventures, new goals, and dreams as we grow old together.

Thank you for loving me; I love you to the moon and back and a thousand times more!”

The Reception, The Magician and The Performances

Meanwhile, during the reception, the magician continued to charm the people with his amazing tricks. He initially went around the tables and amazed the guests with his magic. Later, the magician’s remarkable show for the couple engaged the whole audience into the magic tricks.

Then, there was a stellar dance performance by the bridesmaids and groomsmen. It was the perfect group of people dancing. The bridesmaids had raised the room’s temperature with their killing moves while the super cool groomsmen were matching the groove with the sexiest swag!

The performance by Polly Petrie and her team was like the icing on the cake. The guests went gaga on the team’s killer entry, dressed in attires of various colours. It was an amusing act of the evening, and the audience could not stop cheering.
